Xbox 360: Microsoft Axes Xbox Live Avatar Weapons For The New Year

Gamers on the Xbox 360 Live who have been pampered with its Avatar experience of customizing their character in several of its online games will have some reason to rush purchases of some Avatar items. Publisher Microsoft has announced a new policy that takes effect on day one of 2012, ending the sale of weapons for Avatars.

Epic Games was the first to break the news saying in a post warning, “Heads up! Starting on Jan. 1st, 2012, the Lancer and Hammerburst avatar items will no longer be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. If you’ve purchased the items prior to Jan. 1st, you will be able to keep them. A new policy goes into effect for all gun-like avatar items on the Marketplace, so get them while they’re hot.”

That means that you can no longer weaponize your Avatar in 2012. Epic will be removing its Lancer prop from the Avatar Marketplace at the start of the New Year in compliance with the new policy. So, if your current Avatar needs a weapon as part of its wardrobe arsenal, you better buy them on or before 2011 ends. That’s just a few days away.

Several gamers have reacted in blogs and forums that Microsoft is going in the wrong direction when it deprives fans of its games with about the same items that make playing those games a rewarding experience. Removing those Avatar weapons won’t be making society a safe place to live in anytime. Gamers who already have these weapons will have no problem as they can keep those weapons even as the new policy goes into effect prospectively. Starting 1st of January, you won’t see those weapons in the Avatar Marketplace.
