Sleeping Dogs: Hong Kong Got Square Enix Excited
You have to credit game publisher Square Enix with having strong instincts regarding new games. Take the case of the upcoming independently-titled true crime series installment, Sleeping Dogs. According to the game’s senior producer Jeff O’Connell, the upcoming game’s Hong Kong setting sealed the deal for Square Enix.
Setting the game first time in Hong Kong excited the publisher. Why? “There’s not a lot of cop games, so the original in that respect sounds amazing. And the guys that came off Just Cause and Arkham and saw our mechanics, they loved that as well,” said O’Connell. Regardless, other companies that took a peek at Sleeping Dogs weren’t as impressed as Square Enix. At least that is what O’Connell implied: “[Open world games] are system-driven and the system is essentially building a world simulator and that doesn’t really play nicely together until near the end when all the systems are in place.”
Everything comes together near the end of this complicated process and this might be the reason some other unnamed publishers walked away with the wrong impression. Square Enix, according to Jeff O’Connell, gets the process and sees the value in the project. It is backing the developer United Front as it works to complete the open world game. The game is slated for release in the later half of this year.
Have you watched the live action trailer for Sleeping Dogs yet? Well, you should! It’s quite awesome.
