Prey 2: What on Earth is Going on at Bethesda?
At the weekend a Dutch website called PS Focus reported that Bethesda had cancelled it’s upcoming FPS sequel Prey 2. It didn’t take long for the internet at large to start discussing it. I for one read about the matter first on Reddit, before dismissing the claim.
Prey 2 was looking really, rather special. The preview that we saw at E3 last year really was quite spectacular, as Bethesda games usually are. The developers, Human Head, were certainly seeming to be making good progress. Yes, with the cancelled Prey 2 San Francisco GDC presentation and a rather telling tweet about the subject from lead programmer of Human Head Studios, Brian Karis, that stated that the cancellation of the talk was down to Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax (the same people who took Notch’s Mojang to court over copyright infringement) I could see why there was some mileage to the story. But over all I could see no reason whatsoever to believe this so called “inside source”.
Well now I fear there may be egg on my face. Kotaku, GameInformer , and Eurogamer have all tried to contact Bethesda over the last few days for comment but without any luck. Surely if no decision had been made then it would be very easy for the publisher to squash the rumours. The longer the silence, the more and more likely something is a foot. Hopefulls there has been no-word about Prey 2 because they are all far too busy with a Skyrim DLC. However that is probably unlikely. It is very sad to see yet another promising looking project nipped in the bud, and I am sure, if the rumours do turn out to be true, then there will be some very disappointed developers and some even more disappointed gamers.
