Grand Theft Auto 5: Wii U Launch Date Appears Deliciously Dubious
Grand Theft Auto 5 launching with the upcoming Wii U console would definitely be a dream come true-for Nintendo. But a possible logistical and marketing headache for Take 2 Interactive and Rockstar Games. As we have written repeatedly before, nothing stokes game rumors more than a hot franchise working on a sequel and a new console pending launch.
Put these two topics together and you have an explosion of rumors. That’s precisely what is happening regarding the speculation of when Nintendo’s successor console to the Wii will launch and the general excitement about Grand Theft Auto 5. Excitement and speculation over when GTA 5 will launch has collided with when the Wii U will launch and gave birth to the dubious claim that Grand Theft Auto 5 will launch with the Wii U when the console drops on November 18. While the November 18 date is as good as any other date, trying that date to Grand Theft Auto 5 goes against some hard realities. The truth is that Rockstar never released any release date for the upcoming open world action adventure game. Also, releasing the game on November 18 will be tantamount to Rockstar cannibalizing its other releases’ commercial prospects.
It also goes against Rockstar’s previous release scheduling patterns (it released GTA 4 in April 29). Also, a November 18 release date puts Rockstar up against the release window for EA’s shooter and this year’s COD release. It would truly be surprising if this rumor, based on supposed “financial statements” and inside sources, pans out.
