Final Fantasy 13-2: Titles Goes for Less Linearity But Holds on to Storyline

Fans complained about just how linear the original Final Fantasy 13 was. Well, complaints against linear games or games that go from beginning to end are becoming more common lately. This is due to the rise of sandbox style games that allow more freedom and a lot more exploration.

Linearity is a problem with most games that are focused on the story. In stories, you have to jump from one section to another and then to the next. There is a logical flow of events. This seems like a good thing for awhile but gamers want something different. They now know that open worlds such as the one demonstrated by The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim are possible. Because of the reaction to the original Final Fantasy 13, the sequel Final Fantasy 13-2 is heading towards a less linear and more open gameplay style. It does not really go all the way sandbox. It still depends on the story. So, it used time travel as part of the plot. You can watch the latest Final Fantasy 13-2 travel trailer if you want to know more about the time travel device. The trailer should give you a general idea of just what to expect. Final Fantasy 13-2 will arrive in North America at the end of this month. The European launch will follow on February 2nd.

The Final Fantasy move is not that drastic, it seems. The franchise still holds on to a solid storyline. It is still not ready to let the characters really wander off. Time travel can make the characters jump around in time but it cannot really let characters jump out of the story. Still, it is a good effort from Square Enix as it tries to get out of the completely linear standstill. Maybe the title is still not a sandbox game but it could be more interesting.
