Dishonored: Player Choice is the Key Factor
I honestly cannot wait to see more of this game. I hope from the bottom of my heart that it can deliver everything that Bethesda and Arkane Studios are promising. In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine co-creative directors Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio have proudly stated that Dishonored will be all about offering the player choice. As player choice is what makes gaming an experience that is unique to the individual player, and what sets the genre apart from movies.
Set in its dark, corrupt, and tyrannical world, Dishonored pits the player against a back drop of violence and pestilence. Corvo, is a very powerful, so powerful in fact that Arkane Studios feel the need to reign that power in, lest the title become too easy. In this way, Colantonio describes how each feat of magic will cost Corvo “Essence”, as he uses up his resources. This will then mean that the player will have to make choices, so that the Essence is spent wisely. A player can be stealthy or gun-ho, or a mixture of both. The game is supposed to reward creativity. The game’s testers discovered that Corvo could break his fall by possessing the body of someone on the ground, the developers hadn’t even thought of that, and it is also possible to shoot a guard with his own bullet if the player is creative enough. According to the creative directors a player will need to combine all sorts of tactics while playing Dishonored.
Player choice also comes into play when deciding the best way to eliminate a target. An opportunity may appear that offers the player a chance to neutralise an enemy with using direct violence. Each method has its own implications and it is down to the player to decide. As this is a totally new IP we really are just going to have to wait and see. I cannot wait for gameplay footage. This game looks so, so sweet.
