Dishonored: A Lesson in Stealth
Small outfit Arkane Studios look like they have pulled a blinder of a game. Published by Bethesda, Dishonored is a steam punk assassination game with a dark secret up its sleeve. Your character, Corvo, has supernatural powers.
Fresh from GamesCom, where yours truly actually got her hands on the game, Bethesda have released a tutorial based on the idea of stealth. The idea behind the video is that a good assassin avoids detection, but a great assassin remain undetected. The video takes the viewer on a guided tour of just some of Corvo’s super natural powers. These include the ability to view his enemies field of view, that is marked by beams of light coming from their eyes.
Aside from the supernatural powers, the tutorial encourages prospective Dishonored players, to use any means necessary to achieved their mission. This includes the use of distraction, either by making a sound on a harp in another room, or my causing a commotion to draw the attention of the guards. While it is possible to complete the game by hacking and slashing, it is actually a lot more rewarding to think of how to complete the mission without needless collateral damage. That is a very refreshing idea for an assassination game. Take Assassin’s Creed, for example, yes, you achieve your goal, but the senseless killing of hundreds of non-Templars is never really explained. It is the same, to a certain extent, with the Hitman series.
Anyway, this editorial team is almost wetting themselves with excitement for this game. We hope you are too?
