Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3: What Next for Robert Bowling

Following last week’s shock announcement that Robert Bowling, the creative mind behind Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty games, had resigned we are left asking the question “what will he do next?”

His departure was so sudden and unexpected that those of us following the twitters weren’t quite sure if it was a troll. Bowling, an avid tweeter and the official spokesperson for Infinity Ward was tweeting normally in the morning, answering people’s questions and then suddenly he announced that he was resigning. Nothing official has been said about his motivation for leaving the company though he did say, again via Twitter, that “there’s far too many amazing things going on in our industry right now to be content spending life on just 1.”  A true master of 140 characters or less.

But the reality could be a little bit darker than that (we’ll it probably isn’t but we love a bit of intrigue). In a recent interview with Machinima, Bowling spoke out about how he felt that gamers shouldn’t have to pay for DLC of classic maps, and content that they probably paid for the first time round too. This is very much contradictory to the Activision lets squeeze as much money out of people as possible model. I like to think, therefore, that his departure was an heroic gesture on behalf of the fans. But it probably wasn’t.

For someone of Bowling’s caliber the world really is an oyster. Maybe the Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 mastermind will join his former colleagues at Respwan, or any of the other upcoming dev teams. I for one however would like to see him start something new, branch out on his own. Whatever he decides to do, I have every faith that it will be a success.
