Battlefield 3: Beta Disappoints XBox 360 Users

The day that FPS fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. The closed Beta for premier FPS Battlefield 3 has finally opened. The internet has been awash with rumors that the game’s consoles ports will feature inferior graphics in comparison with Battlefield 3′s PC version. Unfortunately it seems from the first few screenshots to hit the internet that the rumors have proved to be true. Certainly from shots coming from XBox 360 Beta testers, Battlefield 3 appears to be suffering from low resolution textures.

Now before anybody jumps to conclusions it is important to remain positive. This is only a Beta after all. It is perfectly plausible that DICE have turned down the resolution in order to make the Battlefield 3 Beta download smaller and the Beta is far from being problem free in other areas, for example some testers have reported that some objects appear to be floating. Community manager Daniel Matros, earlier this month, tried to lay the rumors that Battlefield 3 would suffer on the consoles to rest by confirming that DICE do not back down on quality. Not that this did much to dampen the spirits of the most hardened doubters.

However with the Xbox 360 graphics leaving a nasty taste in the mouths of the Beta testers should PS3 owners be worried? At the beginning of September Sony’s vice president of publisher relations, Robert Dyer, slammed Microsoft for “protecting inferior technology”. It has long been considered that the technical muscle of the Xbox 360 has held back games developers from reaching their full potential so could the poor graphics be the fault of Microsoft and not DICE? Time will tell if the PS3 can compete with the PC port of Battlefield 3 as more Beta screens hit the web. We only hope that Xbox 360 can keep the pace.

Looks pretty good to me, in action anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb2jK6M7Uh0

It plays like a hybrid between BF:BC2 and MOH, taking the best bits of both and throwing them into one game.

Though it has it’s set backs with the low texture resolutions, slow rendering and plenty of bugs it does show a lot of promise and once you finally get to settle into a match you will start to enjoy the game.

Please remember though that this is only a beta and the graphics may have been reduced in order reduce the file size for download. Bugs will be fixed in time for release or just after release via a launch patch.

My only disappointment with Metro is once you emerge from the tunnels into the urban area, it is rather small rather than a long street with a few back alleys. So far my ability to blast a patch through buildings has been very limited to making windows and doors bigger. Also I believe there was talk of the Bradley APC/light tank available on the Metro map at the start, though in the beta it is not there. I take this though to be a good sign that the full release will be very much different.

One downside to the team side of things is that unlike BC2, unless you have audio communication with other squad members it is pretty hard sticking together and working as a team. Also forming a squad of friends and then going into a match has proven a particular problem and does not feel as organised as BC2. Again perhaps the interface and menus before joining games will be different.
I also believe I saw mention a few weeks back of there being a server browser for the console version, this has not been included in the beta if it is true. And due to a lack of servers, at prime time it is nearly impossible getting into a server.

Ultimately I am keeping my pre-order for the Xbox 360 version of the game from Amazon and look forward to the full release and the patches to develop it further. Let us remember that BC2 has several major overhaul patches for it’s multiplayer during it’s time so we could expect the same with Bf3.

    • Ryan

MOH online sucked, i don’t know why they felt they had to include it in there. I think the game would of been better off if it stuck to the BF”BC 2 style graphics in my opinion. Otherwise it seems to be a good game :D .

  • Mike

I don’t think we’ve got anything to worry about here. There are bound to be issues that’s why they do a Beta. DICE have got a lot riding on this game. I have pre-ordered this on XBox 360 and I think it will be fine. I am not going to cancel my order just because a few blurry pictures have been released. That vid that @DV posted gives you a much better idea and that guy had his settings on medium. Those people on the Beta should just report the bugs and stop complaining.

  • Überboy

I am glad the author chose to acknowledge that Microsoft are holding back game developers with the XBox. Battlefield 3 will run just fine on the PS3. Though I will still be playing it on my PC – I prefer the controls that way.

    • Georgie

If anything the console controllers are better. Just saying.

      • Überboy

That’s just your opinion. Everyone is different. My GF has to invert her controllers I mean WTF?!

        • lmao

          You need to chill!

      • Dan

You obviously don’t play many PC games do you? If you’re going by pure accuracy a mouse is FAR superior to analog sticks. But if it’s just a personal preference I guess whatever floats your boat.

    • Barrrs

LOL Yea… those stupid developers. How dare they try to deliver a product to an audience that makes up over 90% of the world gaming community. “Holding back.” Gotta love it.

    • XboxFAN101

ok obviously you dont know the specs of the xbox 360 compaired to the PS3.. Its kinda funny you would say this.. first off both the PS3 and the xbox 360 have the similar graphics cards and the only time the PS3 can pull the full potential of 1080p is with movies that are on blue ray discs. So yeah obviously they can cram more stuff onto the blue ray disc for there games that is the only thing ps3 has over the xbox.. And lets not forget if it werent for xbox buying out the rights to final fantasy there would be no PS3 anymore.. considering they almost went bankrupt during the PS3 launch. Thank you Microsoft.

  • DogMonkey

It’s actually an open beta, not closed. I can hardly take you seriously if you can’t even get that right.

  • lolwtf

Who gives a fuck? As long as a game is good, I couldn’t care less about graphics

GTA 3, VC and SA >>>>>>> GTA IV by a long shot

  • Goosie

Really? This article seems like it has completely ignored all other released information for BF3 up to this point.

It’s always been clear the graphics were not going to be as good as the PC. It’s simply not possible, the 360 is a 7 year old piece of hardware. It’s why they had to also compromise the players to 24 and limit the FPS to 30.

Not that I’m bashing 360, or BF. I play on 360 primarily and from what I’ve heard from my friends who are in the pre-Beta the graphics are on the same level as Crysis 2, so essentially about the best the 360 is currently (and probably ever) going to be able to do. I’m also looking forward immensely to BF. I like how their “first impression” is about the difference in graphics between PC and 360, and doesn’t even touch on how the game itself plays, which is what really matters.

Its not just the 360, its the PS3, both consoles are holding back game development. It will always be that way with consoles as they are mostly non-upgradeable. That’s why BF has the PC as the lead development platform, it is really the way it should be IMO for any cross-platform title. And PC on the cutting edge will always look better than a 7 year old 360. Is this REALLY a surprise to anyone?

  • Sammi

Well I haven’t played the beta yet but I really hope that the quality isn’t bad. It looks AMAZING on the clips and screenshots but I guess I will find out tomorrow at 9:00am!

  • Cloud Strife

I love how everyone says the 360 is holding gaming back, despite the fact that the PS3 is no more powerful. They both suck graphically by todays standards. Oh and holding graphics back, is not the same as holing games back (unless you are a graphics whore, which most of you seem to be)

But apart from the retards who masturbate over high-res textures, the rest of us more intellectual folk realise the consoles are improving the games industry, not holding it back.

Games in recent times have become forever shorter, lacking in depth and lacking imagination (aka CoD and BF3). Compare todays games to that of the PS1/2 days where story modes would last 100+ hours, not 5+ hours, when games were immersive and explorable, not walk down path after path (aka FF13), remember when there were so many different game genre’s, and not just a load of over-rated first person shooters?! Remember those days? Well I do, and it is for this reason the current consoles need a long life span

If new consoles came out now we’d have high res textures (box of tissues at the ready lads), but we’d have even shorter games, EVEN less genre diversity, and EVEN less immersive in-depth games. All because development costs have shot up

To highlight what I mean let’s look at Gears of war series. Number one took 6-7 hours to complete, number 2 took 8-10 hours to complete, and number 3 took 10-12 hours to complete. Number 3 was also more immersive with a greater diversity of enemies, and much more to do, collect, unlock etc on the multiplayer. They are able to improve all this because development costs have come down over the years.

Still nowhere near good enough, and games are still lacking in variety, length, originality, and general quality when compared to the games of past generations, but the PS3/360 games are taking huge steps in the right direction. It’ll be a year or two yet before games get back to how they should be. Then, and only then, can new consoles be considered.

So to all the fools saying console power is holding back gaming, you are wrong, they are pushing it forward.

As for graphics, Crysis looked awesome, but it a utterly shit game!
FF7 looks shit, but is the greatest computer game ever made.

If someone asked me to pick one and play it, I’d pick FF7 every time.

In conclusion, on childish, first-person shooting loving, high-res texture bumming kids believe consoles hold gaming back.

    The end

    Fin ^^

  • Michael

Seriously? I have the beta for 360 and its fine. Obviously there is going to be bugs and minor detailing on certain things, but at least take that into consideration before bashing a beta.

  • Lance

Thats why it’s a beta. It’s not finalized. Changes will be made from suggestions by the playing community. No problems for me…

  • Clark

The graphics look fine. As long as the gameplay is awesome who cares. I’m going to have stupid amounts of fun tonight playing the beta :)

  • Excaliber

It looks amazing on all consoles. Of course it will look better on PC, that’s true for every game. And I don’t agree with it saying Xbox 360 has held back PS3 graphics wise. Uncharted is a PS3 exclusive, and I’d say that it’s graphics are worse than Halo Reach, exclusive for 360. They use two different platforms and ways of putting an image on the screen, but I think that everyone assumes that PS3 has better graphics and 360 is just keeping it from going all out. When BF3 comes out, it will push the envelope far enough that I’m pretty sure that we’ve hit a wall, and both PS3 and Xbox 360 are maxed out when it comes to graphics. We have to wait for the next gen consoles to come out before we think about better graphics. But BF3 will be an amazing game and we should all appreciate the work that has gone into it.

    • shut up now

lol, xbox360 has better online play

  • Chris

“The internet has been awash with rumors that the game’s consoles ports will feature inferior graphics in comparison with Battlefield 3′s PC version.”

-rumors? more like common sense you idiot. this article holds no credibility

  • Dan

It’s comical hearing people still claiming the PS3 consistently has better graphics than the xbox. Ah, to be uninformed.

    • This is what I think so far.

Trust me when I say this, It looks almost the same but I’ve noticed with a lot of games is the fact xbox360 has slightly better HD output display

    • This is what I think so far.

Also this is very true, xbox360 has better gameplay because everyone pays for its network/online gaming. So the connect is faster, result = better & improved gameplay! I’m not taking any sides but its true

      • This is what I think so far.

        connection* I mean

  • This is what I think so far.

I’ve been playing bf3 on xbox360 & I think its amazing so far. Its doing great considering its old hardware & out of date. The lighting is amazing & the gameplay is there too. I have noticed alot of bugs that include “rag doll effects, sound problems, flashes on screen which appear to be white, red and green & reload animation problems. The only thing I dont like is the texture surfaces on a few objects, such as the posters on the walls in the subway tunnels & the sandbags but I hope they will fix this. You got to remember that the demo is only beta & also the fact its been compressed down to make the scale of the demo smaller to make it quicker to download. I would say this again, shadows & a few textures need to be improved, not fully, but improved so it looks quite nice. Let me know what the rest of you think. Overall, I’m loving the beta demo so far.

  • butters

Immediately disappointed with the beta, i’m an experienced BC2 player and the beta just doesn’t feel right, putting glitches aside there seems to be little solidity while ADS (getting kills is a little bit ‘pot luck’ for my liking), All the new animations (scaling low walls, knife anims etc) leave it feeling twitchy, the spawn/loadout screen is too complex and I find myself spending way too much time there, selecting a squad buddy to spawn on requires an intimate knowledge of the map because you cant see the full map to know where exactly he/she is. I could go on but I hope for a big improvement on release day or the trade counter may get a returned copy of BF3 on November 8th.(I daren’t mention the ‘c’ word)

  • Dan

Guess what…PSN is down, yeah that’s why I gladly pay for Xbox LIVE

    • miguel

OH, PSN IS DOWN…BUT XBOX LIKE HAS BEEN HACKED LIKE FOR 5 TIMES SINCE THE XBOX360 CAME OUT…AND IT WAS ONLY DOWN FOR MAINTENCE ITS ALREADY OPEN…OH AND YOU ARE PAYING FOR A SUPPORT? WHAT SUPPORT? FOOLED…

  • faseifj ak

    DISSAPOINT????

I expected to see those kinds of graphics, although its a BETA. Everyone knew this; this note is pointless and butthurt’n cus there’s nothing to talk about, PC is far superior, period.

  • AJ

People really need to start complaining about PC games looking better visually than 360/PS3 games. Of course they’re going to, 360/PS3 use old hardware, and are unable to be updated, unlike a PC. There’s no reason a PC version of a game should have it’s quality held back to appease the “console-only” kiddies that get jealous. If you want better graphics, get a PC. Nothing against 360/PS3, I own them both, but I also own a PC, and it’s just really getting old when people complain that the PC version shouldn’t be allowed to have better graphics.

That would be like people complaining that the quality of a movie on a Blu-Ray disc should be limited to the same quality as a movie would be on a regular DVD because they don’t own a Blu-Ray player and it’s not fair that people with Blu-Ray players get better quality. It’s really getting quite stupid at this point. If you want better graphics then build a PC and buy the game on PC instead. Simple as that.

  • AJ

Also, forgot to mention, I’ve played the Beta for a couple hours today and I’m actually quite surprised at how it looks for console. Didn’t think it would look as good as it did, and this is only a Beta.

  • jas

Theres just more people playing it on the 360. about 3 million is the reason why the servers crash. Unlike less than a million for the ps3

  • Horse

Played the Beta on 360 today.
Im a solid veteran owning all Battlefield games from the start on PC
Great gameplay on the beta. Bugs of course to be expected!
Graphics are about 40% short of bad company 2 on xbox.
However this is only a beta, if the graphics did stay the same i would of thought it would be to do with keeping the frame rates in check with alot more close combat environments and more players in one area. However i feel the graphics could be improved, im not worried too Mich about shadows and normally turn them down in the pc versions.
Crysis 2 has much better textures on xbox 360. But less effects that prostate brings. it has to be an equal compromise.

    Overall opion:Early days!

    • Horse

      Frostbite not prostate!! Lol

  • hobob

the beta is not the final game its simply out there so that Dice can test out how the game feels to the average player, if you bothered to research properly you would see the developers talking about this subject.

link to the battlefield website where they have a trailer of the release graphics.

  • BoomStick

Not to piss anyone off who uses the “PC is far superior” crutch, but BF3 is running 60 FPS. That is no where near the max handled by XBOX360 or PS3. Case in point MW3 runs around 130 FPS. Sure the PC is capable of more than console, but that is not why BF3 graphics suck. BF3 graphics suck because BF3 graphics suck! Originally at the E3 show Dice claimed the low FPS (frames per second) were due to needing to accommodate for the large scale warfare like which was a part of BF2. However we all know now that console versions of BF3 will have smaller scale warfare of 20-30 something players. This number is barely larger than the total allowed players in some MW2 game types. BF3 is below par for consoles and the only thing to blame is the game developers.

  • LO

Just played the final release Oct 25th for a few hours on Xbox. Not good! I’m disappointed, the gameplay feels jerky, and the graphics look terrible compared to the teasers…

This is just what I was looking for. I was not expecting that I’d get so much out of reading your write up! You’ve just got yourself a returning visitor
