Batman – Arkham City: 6 Million Units Shipped in 2011

Reading corporate financial statements can be an art of patience and diligence more than a financial science. It is like reaching deep into a Halloween trick or treat bag down to your arm and pulling out some interesting looking candy. You have to really tease out the details. If you’re an investor, you’ll often be rewarded with financial details that may make or break your would-be investment.

Time Warner’s recently released financial statement for the fiscal year 2011 yielded an interesting gem that is sure to excite not just potential and current investors in this multimedia conglomerate but also fans of the Dark Knight. The most recent installment of Time Warner’s Batman open world game title developed by Rocksteady, Batman – Arkham City, shipped six million copies by December 31, 2011. Now, that’s a solid hit regardless of the fact that there is a big difference between a unit that is “sold” and one that is “shipped.”

This is definitely a solid figure and marks quite a strong performance for an obviously key Time Warner intellectual property asset. However, trying to isolate the performance of the games portion of Time Warner from the rest of its corporate subsidiaries is a little bit trickier since its results are blended with two other key subsidiaries – movies and television. Since these latter properties brought in gobs of money, its hard to separate the numbers that represent Time Warners’ video game properties.

These other subsections of its properties rolled in serious dough, around $12.6 billion, thanks to popular assets like the Harry Potter series and TV’s very popular Big Bang Theory. Also getting key mentions in the report are Mortal Kombat and Time Warner’s Lego titles. The report made it clear that these titles were key contributors to the Interactive division’s solid performance last year.
