Angry Birds – Space: Not the Final Frontier for Rovio
Fresh from the news that Angry Birds – Space has reached over 10 million downloads Rovio has revealed that it is in the finishing stages of purchasing Futuremark Games Studio. Although little much more is known about the acquisition many in the industry have begun speculated on what this means for the App developer.
Included in the deal comes the entire Finnish development team, who are already experienced in producing physics games. Leading to speculation that any future offerings from Rovio will also follow this format. Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertain, was quick to sing the praises of his own team and remarked that the new addition of Futuremark Games Studios will be “superb”. Mobile gaming is certainly going from strength to strength. The lucidity of the App market and the costs of developing such simple games means that smaller developers such as Rovio or Zynga, who make the latest sensation Draw Something, can be catapulted into the big time almost overnight. The combination of Rovio and Futuremark Games Studios really marks a turning point for all indie developers. It really goes to show how in today’s gaming world you don’t need big bucks to make something special. Sometimes just a good idea is enough. Like Mojang’s Minecraft for example.
The industry is eagerly waiting to see where Rovio can go after Angry Birds – Space. Hopefully they have their sights on something even bigger following the acquisition of an experienced second arm. We’ll just have to watch this space!
