Wii U: Console Will Include Integral Skylanders-style NFC Technology
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata certainly has had a lot to report in an investor’s briefing. One of the things he discussed is that the Wii Pad, which is Wii U’s tablet-like controller, will be built in with “Near Field Communication” technology (NFC). This technology, according to Nintendo, will “read and write date via noncontact NFC ad to expand the new play format in the video game world.” Through this, owners can create their own cards and even figurines through this NFC functionality.
Basically what Iwata was trying to say is that the Wii Pad will come with a technology that is similar to that of Skylanders. The figurines and cards, which are real world objects, can be used to change the gameplay. Take note thought that Skylanders is using RFID tech, which makes use of a similar concept but is not the same as NFC. The technology, as conceptualized, can be used to pay through credit cards. Iwata has specifically mentioned this feature. What do you think of these plans coming from Nintendo? Is this how you would want your games and consoles to be like? Working with some sort of Drobot? Or would you rather see Nintendo focusing on providing more instalments of tried and true franchises.

The technology is certainly interesting. Maybe it is still too early and we are just reacting the way we usually react to the unknown – apprehensive and not too happy. We may want to cling to the comfort of what we are sure of instead of embracing new technologies. Of course, there is also the possibility that we are comfortable with what works because they are not broken and that they are proven to be great. Anyway, have you tried Skylanders? If you have tried the RFID tech through the game then you may have a more informed reaction to NFC being built into the Wii Pad.
