The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim: Armor system details released
The lead artist for The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim, Matt Carafano, revealed some interesting details regarding the armor system for the latest installment of this much beloved open world RPG series. He has officially confirmed the wholesale overhaul of the armor system for this Bethesda Softworks title.
According to Carafano, “The armor system is very similar to [The Elder Scrolls - ] Oblivion’s. The main difference is that the upper and lower body armors, the cuirass and greaves, have been combined into one piece. This helps create armor styles that have the look we needed for Skyrim. In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary.”

In essence, The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim gets better graphic results with one combined armor piece. Carafano noted that this design move also makes it easier to render the armor. This allows for more armor designs. In fact, this frees up so much variation that the number and variation of armor types exceeds any previous the Elder Scrolls release, according to Carafano. We understand the tradeoff and if the variety of armors is handled properly in the game, this might be a tradeoff that is more than well worth it. There’s only way to find out…
