The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim: Armor system details released

The lead artist for The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim, Matt Carafano, revealed some interesting details regarding the armor system for the latest installment of this much beloved open world RPG series. He has officially confirmed the wholesale overhaul of the armor system for this Bethesda Softworks title.

According to Carafano, “The armor system is very similar to [The Elder Scrolls - ] Oblivion’s. The main difference is that the upper and lower body armors, the cuirass and greaves, have been combined into one piece. This helps create armor styles that have the look we needed for Skyrim. In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary.”

In essence, The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim gets better graphic results with one combined armor piece. Carafano noted that this design move also makes it easier to render the armor. This allows for more armor designs. In fact, this frees up so much variation that the number and variation of armor types exceeds any previous the Elder Scrolls release, according to Carafano. We understand the tradeoff and if the variety of armors is handled properly in the game, this might be a tradeoff that is more than well worth it. There’s only way to find out…

    Ohhhh…..I saw this coming……

  • chuck

Would rather the armor system be more like morrowind, where every peice was separate. I love wearin two totally different gauntlets as well as two different pauldrin. Always like to wear a small say glass on one shoulder and a huge maybe dwarven on the other. Plus loved the way you could have each piece of armor enchanted with different effects and have crazy amounts of effects on all at the same time.

    • gage

yah i agree with chuck, there’s something about seeing an ashland guard with huge pauldrins that makes you want to search and slay the hole land of morrowind to find your perfect mismatch set of armor. then equip a robe of levitation (that covers it all up) to take to the sky, by the way it still looks badass with the bonemold pauldrins sticking out of your fine robe.
i always liked having the choice to put what i want on and going out to find some unique piece of armor or amulet hidden somewhere

well if there going to change it for the better of graphics, then when i find a set rusty iron it better look rusty instead of being exactly the same as the non-rusted set

    • Narmnim

Not sure why anybody would want to mix armor for any other reasons than stats. I think sets it’s a great idea. Don’t know about you, but I want my character to look like he knows how to dress himself. :)

    • goten

i hope they made enchanting armor much better so u can put mulitiple enchantments on them like the ones u ind

  • bobby

you dont rap skyrim skyrim rapes you

  • Alduin’sBane

I worried about this for a long time and I still don’t like it, but I’ve become more acceptable of it. At least they didn’t take away our gauntlets and boots. Fallout 3′s way was ok and this will be too. It’ll be a lot like Dragon Age I suspect. I just hope, like gage said, that there is a LOT of different models for armors (unlike Dragon Age)

  • Lawson

Ok first off I’m fine with armour as long as you make it look good and the best set “IS NOT” daedric, Hint hint-glass from oblivion. My main concern is wepons. In oblivion there where so few variations of wepons. Same goes for spells. Although I loved the spell creation. The game is going to bed good no matter what I’m just afraid that it will be ruined after it is released like oblivion. Meaning fixing the console exploits. The game was extreamly fun but the exploits are what I enjoyed most.

    • Kris

Yeah dude i read a thing on IGN website says the Glass armor is coming back and looks good

  • Danny Immortal

I enjoyed the being able to mix match armour in morrowind, they really need to bring that back, i read on some other websites that bethisda is making it to mod friendly, or somehing like tha, i discourage moding on a good game like Elder Scrolls, but courage it on games such as borderlands, he only reason to mod is to make graphics better, the only reason i would ever want to mod skyrim is for the mix match armour they really need to bring that back ^_^

  • Misses_Morrowind

“Not sure why anybody would want to mix armor for any other reasons than stats.”

It has nothing to do with stats. The elder scrolls are supposed to be role playing games. If I want my character to have matching armor let me chose to wear matching armor. It’s sad to me that the free role playing aspects of the series seem to have peaked at Morrowind. The real reason is simplification in design and to make the game more available to those who don’t care about true roleplaying and just want a fast paced mindless hack and slash with a character that looks ‘cool’. Trying to target all audiences (including 12 year old twitch gamers) is destroying games genres such as the RPG.

    • Kai

Heh! I remember taking notes and such on REAL PAPER with a REAL PENCIL (*gasp!!*) in Morrowind to keep track of storylines and quest details. That really was fun… I hate the Oblivion journaling and especially fast travel. Part of the fun/immersion of Morrowind was actually requiring effort/planning to get around. Even with mods I always still find Morrowind more immersive than it’s successor.

For armor, I do really like the idea of combined cuirass/greaves, but it would be nice to have both options (think of the Sims, where some clothing is just top or bottom, but there are also full suits available for clothes that don’t make sense on just half the body). I also agree that having two different sides for minor armor pieces is both more realistic and more fun.

  • Deep Insight

Why does everybody bring up morrowind, morrowind had the most options but the most flaws, bethesda is clearly going in another direction from its previous games, and simplifying the armor system really doesnt matter because they said that it would make them able to add more armor types to the game (i heard that skyrim has an updated
blacksmithing system that might also have something to do with the armor options being limited) skyrim is trying to add more solid game play (especially for consoles), having ur character be able to choose from a mega ton of different pieces of high graphic armor seems unnecesary when instead of focusing on the amount of options like in morrowind, they are focusing on making solid gameplay

    • Kris

Yes someone who gets it i like the way you think good point

  • ryex180

as long as u can still choose the boots gloves and helmets im ok with this

  • Joe

Am i the only person who is bothered by the fact that glass is being used as armor, and light armor at that? I think they should get rid of the glass armor and replace it with something a little more sensible.

    • Sarathos12

The Glass armor is sensible. Do a little bit of research on it and you’ll see that the glass armor is: “An assortment of rare materials with a very strong volcanic glass to allow for a lightweight armor, stronger than steel due to it’s ability to distribute shock well.”

      • Rice

I think instead of glass armor being the best light armor, since you can make you’re own weapons and armor, you should be able to find a volcano and collect obsidian, or quest it, or just change the name to obsidian. Because obsidian is volcanic glass. Its hard, and super sharp. Plus shiny black armor and weapons would be bad***.

  • Al

The beuty of RPG game engine like Elderscroll is the freedome of choice, a choice to combine diffrent set’s of armor is criticaly importent to the character build. and importent to belivible game, why wouldnt you be able to change gloves? or boots, or shoulder armor. this is the fun part of building your own avatar.

in dragon age 2 the armor system was so bad, becuse of the lake of freedome
dont become a mindless hack and slash game

leave the armor system open! and 6 peices adjustable.
head, chest, shoulders, boots , gloves and legs. not including 1 neckless and 4 rings.

it would make me very sad see how you take away one of the most uniqe element of your game engine.

  • Al

    listen to your fans !

    listen to your fans !

thay dont like the idea of a hole armor set!

i dont like the idea of a hole armor set ! its boring! and unrealistic! dont ruin this game!

  • Shon

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !

    i feared from this!

  • TheAccuraci

This is beter than when u have one gauntlet and one another i dont like that when u must to find any pieces of armor and then oops i dont have second gauntlet, i think this will be better than in Morrowind

  • AlotofDyslexiappl

See this is the problem with upcoming game update’s people who can’t read or don’t understand fully what the changes are, say all kids of dumb**** there linking the grieve’s (I.e “The pants”) With the Cuirass (I.e “the chest piece”)
Now everyone like’s to make Morrowind the basis which all RPG’s should be measured by, And I for one think that is possibly the dumbest thing i have ever heard. Morrowind had some great feature’s no doubt about it. But
(On Console’s atleast) it also had the worst graphic’s/the glitches’t engine ever. The Morrowind Engine made Fallout New Vegas’s engine look like a god send, Fallout New Vegas’s engine has been used in three different game’s and has been the exact same since about three years after Morrowind came out. People always like to comment on how garbage Oblivion was/is. Yet it still outsold Morrowind. Moral of the story is i would rather have a game with 10x the customization of any other RPG on the market, Have it have amazing Graphic’s, be extraordinarily long and full of quest’s with a huge land mass (that doesn’t look like they took half the map flipped it around and pasted it next to the other side) And have it have NO Glitches and be able to climb to the top of any mountain. And if i have to give up pointless **** like pualdron’s or having two different glove’s or two different boot’s. Then im fine with that, The fact is Skyrim will out sale Morrowind/Oblivion put together. No matter what and it will surpass both of them a million time’s over Bethesda’s track record for making games speaks for its self. Look at New Vegas Obsidian Made it and it can’t hold a candle to fallout 3. So for those of you who are so let down by many of the change’s that there bringing to Skyrim i have this to say. Go play Morrowind, Oblivion, Dragon age 1/2, Two world’s 1/2 and stfu. If your already going to complain about the game then you already don’t even deserve to play it.

  • Ryan

Okay I’d like to have a game with no glitches, no problems, and be able to climb to the top of a mountain too. However, not a single one of those things is coming at the price of Combining the grieves and gauntlets, so for all you saying that “It’s fine if we have a great game.” Yeah were going to have a great game, but that has nothing to do with this. They have taken away a level of customization and that is not a good thing. Yes, we can live without it, but we shouldn’t have to because we are the fans and this is what we want. Combining these is upsetting because it should definitely be more like morrowimd. I haven’t played morrowind so I’m not trying to glorify it, but it is definitely a valid point if you look at the fact that they’d be pleasing everyone with this. I can’t imagine anyone was saying “Wow I’m so sick of all this customization, it sucks that I have to get each slot of armor.” And maybe some of you didnt like collecting each piece, but seriously that’s a game. If you don’t have the time to collect armor then Elder Scrolls isn’t the game for you. I’m not trying to be a dick to anyone, just stating the facts. Its supposed to be an immersive role playing game with hours of gameplay, the more they take away from customization the more they’re upset fans they will end up having.

  • Ryan

    Grieves and cuirass, typo

  • spanky

I would prefer more armor types than being able to mix and match to make some goofy outfit. The word “streamlining” always raises red flags for me – just look what “streamlining” has done to tactical shooters like R6 and GR (…puke) – but I’m confident what they’re doing with regards to armor is a wise decision. Read carefully what he said the reasons were and what the result will be. Sounds good to me.

  • vincent

I would still enjoy mixing my armor, just imagine in skyrim wearing a cool armor with a really stupid helmet like the leather helmet in oblivion, what if all of skyrim’s armor’s have ugly helmets!? LISTEN TO YOUR FANS!

  • boss

i don’t see any sense in this new armor system. hopefully there are no more of these stupid features in skyrim :S

  • baba

as the previous posters mentioned: LISTEN TO YOUR FANS! what’s the matter with this outfit??? please give us good news about skyrim!

  • devon

I see no need for them to do this. As if Oblivion had horrible looking armor and clothing combinations enough, now they make it worse by taking away the combinations we can do so that we may use armor that looks like crap, or say if we like the shirt but not the pants, we would have to deal with the ugly pants instead of switching them out. This just really seems like Bethesda is getting lazy, or trying to appeal to lower minded players. If they end up going through with this, they should end up coming out with ATLEAST 3x more armor/clothing sets than in oblivion, or else it just wouldnt really be worth it.

  • bobba

do you remember when they combined a bunch of weapons skills in Oblivion to simplify the game :S this is the same s***! that means skyrim will need a bunch of modding again -.-

  • ShinChan

ohh damn i don’t really like mods for RPG’s :S
what types of armor are they nordic fur? nordic ringmail??? in my opinion morrowind was the best and oblivion the weakest. what about skyrim now?? i think we have fear that skyrim could replace oblivion :S

  • Mason

Ok well some are complaining about looks of the clothing. Well the are making more armor types so there has to be something you like. Not to mention their engine makes the graphics better which will make armor look better. Someone said something about not liking the pants but liking the shirt, well i dont understand how you cant like the chest armor but not the greaves when they have been combined to blend in with one another and look the same. If you dont like the greaves you dont like the whole piece and you should avoid it. I understand that more pieces of your clothing is a nice touch but seriously that would mean less armor types and what if you dont like any of em in Skyrim then? All this customization but you have nothing that you think looks cool to you. The way they’re doing ot now is simplifying it but only to make sure everubody has something that they like by adding more variety of armor types.

    • Devin Koser

I agree with the majority of these comments. Please consider having multiple 1-piece (suit) armors but also leave open the option of having other types as mix and match armor pieces. 2 different gauntlets, 4 different rings, a helmet with earmuffs, bikini coconut spiked armor, whatever… The point is, fantasy (create a huge game world environment, creatures, plot, sub-plots, secret treasures, stashes, etc.) and combine that with the most unlimited RPG (Role-Playing!!!!! Muliple ways engage PCs/NPCs, change moods like in Fable, change ways people react to you depending on outcomes of main plots and sub-plots with different endings on that, plus easy things like wearing whatever you want in whatever order you want…. Chicken on your head for helmet, so be it! Want to destroy a mage’s house and knock over a table and set the house on fire! Let us do it and show us consequences of doing it…. THAT is an RPG!!! Combine the both= any you’ll have the Ultimate RPG Fantasy game ever!!! Take away any amount of either and you’ll always be lacking in what people are looking for!

PS. People- Please learn how to spell if you want Bethesda to take you seriously!!! Little spell check on word before posting might help!

  • Skyrim

is it true that you’re able to craft new armor pieces using materials that can be found in world of skyrim???

  • PowerRanger

they just said that greaves and cuirass are combined, so what’s the matter?? you can still wear different boots, gloves, helmets…..

    • Warden

Finally a voice of reason. LISTEN PEOPLE!!! Only the chest piece and greaves are combined. You can have any helmet, pair of boots, and any pair of gloves that you want. All of you who are complaining about loosing one option of customization need to take a chill pill and read what was stated about why this one change was done. it was to allow the creation of many more pieces of armor by making available more space in the game. More armor = more customization on a bigger scale. So everyone, relax, and wait until the game comes out and you have played it for awhile before you start your rant sessions.

  • Hero

i like the new armor system in skyrim. have you seen all the details seen in the demos and screen shots??? in my opinion they look amazing!

  • SonGoku

so there are only 4 different slots open to customization??? that’s a mess if you compare skyrim to oblivion’s 5 slots :(

  • Kris

Why? I hate this idea. Takes away from the feeling of finally completing a whole set… F****** Bethesda..

  • Raven

this is a feature that i’ve been waiting for. making your own weapons and sell or trade them to other online players sound really interesting. can’t wait for skyrim anymore.

  • Beta

i think fable 3 promised a similar feature like what you’ve mentioned…but hell yeah that would a very nice revolutionary feature for tes!

  • Goku

i like the new 3rd person view very well, which can be seen i several gameplayvideos. i’ve also seen some face screens and i have to say they look very good and they got nice shapes :)

  • ghost

i have to say that they really made a new game in contrast to oblivion. graphics, gameplay….nice work guys!

  • Nate

I get where the people going against this are coming from, but really this is something I’ve actually been hoping for. I can honestly say, in oblivion and morrowind I never wore a cuirass without the matching greaves unless I didn’t have the set in my inventory. Most of the combinations that weren’t in the same set looked goofy as s*** and from what I understand they designed these new cuirass/greaves sets to look very well together. You can still choose your Body piece, helmet, gauntlets, and boots so theirs really no problem here in my opinion. Keep up the good work Bethesda!

  • jones

in oblivion the main pieces of armor that gets degraded are greaves and the cuircus so does that mean in skyrim seen as there both the same piece or armor does it degrade twice as quick

  • drjm

Lets face the facts, the game is going to be good (hopefully) and when you play the game, compleate quests and upgrade/customise armour it’s going to be enjoyable and anyone who takes time out of playing the game to complain about the lack of armour needs take a break from games full stop because your overthinking things. Yeah, I think it would be better with more customisation but when you compare it to many games today, this is still really good.

Finally ‘jones’ there is no armour degrading anymore its just upgrading armour and weapons now sadly.

  • Fish

I’m sorry but the armor in Morrowind and even Oblivion looked pretty sh*tty, and for one reason, they had to design every piece of armor to be universal to others so nothing flowed. Now the two key pieces of armor are designed as one because it looks like actually armor, not a dress with pauldrons sticking out of it. What do you want a bunch of sh*t, or a still pretty large selection of quality armor? And the RPG purists are just being closed minded dorks, we care about good graphics not because we’re lesser minded people, but because we figure if we’re going to play this game for hours on end, then we don’t want to have to be staring at sh*tty graphics. You want bad graphics with a ton of choices of armor, then go play WOW. Video games are art, would you hang sh*t on your wall? I don’t think so.

“Skyrim” – Love it or leave it.

    • Fish

      actual*

  • Oblivion

i hope there will be no dlc’s for skyrim. i wish there will be an add-on instead of all the little dlc’s which have to be downloaded one by one…

    • Warden

I agree, to a degree. Add-on’s are great because they give you large amounts of new things to do and enjoy. But the DLC’s, they give you those small little things that make you smile and say, “that’s pretty cool.” try not to write them off too early. Both are needed for a good game to expand and grow and both make a gamer feel good about his/her gaming experience.

  • Wesley

I for one don’t have a problem with combining the cuirass and greaves, my problem is the lack of pauldrens. The only thing that I’d change about this armor system is the absence of pauldrens. I say, keep the cuirass and greaves BUT include pauldrens AND gloves as separate pieces of armor rather then pairs.

  • GANKSR 1

All u guys cryn bout da game. U dnt kno if ure gonna like it or not. Well see. Be glad their still maken the best games like elder scrolls. And there wont be a demo for skyrim. PEACE!

  • Warden

LISTEN PEOPLE!!! Only the chest piece and greaves are combined. You can have any helmet, pair of boots, and any pair of gloves that you want. All of you who are complaining about loosing one option of customization need to take a chill pill and read what was stated about why this one change was done. it was to allow the creation of many more pieces of armor by making available more space in the game. More armor = more customization on a bigger scale. So everyone, relax, and wait until the game comes out and you have played it for awhile before you start your rant sessions.

  • Jile

Ahh, lame. I was really disappointed when Oblivion over-simplified armor, now it looks like it’s going to be even simpler.

I was so confident that Bethesda would learn from Oblivion’s failings and make the game contain more of the freedoms from Morrowind.

  • Mrhankey

Skyrim is going to be the most beautiful game ever made. The screens and game play video just prove that time and time again.

  • Armorschmarmor

I love how passionate people get about this kind of thing but I think are friend Warden here might be trolling. I haven’t seen any rant sessions on this thread.

  • Jacob Griffiths

I would just like to ask you guys how many games have you sold? Whats that none. So maby you should shut up and trust the people who are paid to make these decisions or just replay morowind for the rest of your lives.

  • King

well in comparison to oblivion, you’ll just loose one piece of armor in skyrim. but the big deal is, that the characters can now render faster, which is a very nice feature in my opinion!

  • Kimbo

what about the dragons in skyrim? i’ve heard they will be a highlight, but why do i see them in every video??

  • Chris

hmm i wonder how the relationships in skyrim will work though.maybe they will include marriage or something like that, like in fable…would be a nice feature ;)

  • Mike

Haha I like people over reacting. You cant make progress by thinking the same way everytime so they are trying something different

  • jt844

man i agree with the people who think more armor is better,i mean in morrowind there was too many armor pieces to make an armor set you would find bits and pieces every once in a while but for those people who want bad*** armor all at once im with you,i recognize morrowinds flaws but i still love it,and for those of you getting all pissed off at bethesda try getting off your ***es and make your own game just the way you want it.

  • Ashton

yeah i agree with you! it’s nice to see some new innovations in skyrim. we’ll see how it works ;)

  • Wiz

i like the new features too! could be some nice innovations if they’re well implemented ;)

  • Lucian Dragos

Well as to Warden… While many people here are just bugging about one thing being gone, others see the broad picture, I.E. where this is heading. If the fans just lay back and take what ever is given to them then the over simplified systems will just keep getting worse with every release. To the comparisons to Marrowind I both agree and disagree, Morrowind was a very deep and involved game when is came to character building but this was a double edged sword. On one hand you made just what you wanted, but on the other so many things to work on the game its self was not long enough to truly flesh out your intent. I don’t like the “increasingly” simplified clothing and armor system but the combining of the grieves and cuirass would not be so bad if as another had said have the pauldrin separate (I always kind of liked the one bare one armored arm look =P). Same could be said for skills, Blunt and axe should not be the same skill being two fundamentally different tools but long and short sword are close enough for a games POV to be one skill…. Really what is needed is not just a Morrwind with up to date graphics or the simpler Oblivion but a batter balance of the two

(just think it could be worse one set suits like fallout!)

  • TacticalProdigy

Alot of oblivion got on my nerves but still ended up better than i imagined! I never played morrowind but i can understand customization.. and i just feel like if they give you the options to customize all your gear in morrowind & then dumb down the customization for Skyrim.. it just hits people ya’kno? like WTF.. if bethesda has there reasons thats fine.. they made the game, but i figure why would they tell you about it if its a bad thing? im more worried about stuff they dont mention.. either way im buying skyrim and im going to be a stealthy magic panther, that only uses his claws and amazing magic.. im roleplaying my khajiit is from the deep Jungles of Elsywer, he didnt associate with other khajiit, because they feared his magic as a cub & treated him like an outsider.. so he ran away deep into the darkest dankest depths of the rain forest to hunt and thrive.. One night he was stalking a boar when a loud voice called out DOVAKIIN!!! he followed the voices for months until he ended up in a place called bruma.. on arrival some guards accused him of being a thief and tryed to put shackles on him.. not understanding laws or thievery.. but knowing he did nothing wrong he attacks the guards and sadly gets out numberd 20-1 and gets locked up.. and thats my start off story… Seems everybody hates khajiit saying shlt like they’ll get distracted by shoe strings, and lick ass.. but when it comes to fact.. Lions have special vocal chambers to roar loud enough to be heard 5 or so miles.. so a Khajiit doing dragon shouts is godly compared to a nord.. also i will use my claws & magic instead of weapons so ill have extra room for all the usefull perks, like all schools of magic + stealth and some of the speech tree to make good money to buy my kitty play house with ;) ill have a dark elf as a wife, the only race of women kinky enough to hook up with a WereCat lol.. its going to be cool if i can be a polygamist in skyrim.. by end game my character will be decked out like hugh heffner in the playboy mansion

  • Dr Pedro

Ha ha ha. Now theres a player who takes his role playing seriously, *sniff* brings a tear to my eye. But seriously people, for those of you complaining, just watch the 40 min gameplay video and if that doesn’t cast all doubt that Skyrim will be the best tes game ever, your an ass licking khajiit.

  • SpikeDking

I soo agree with the morrwind fans, its all about the customizing, i mean for real in my owne imagination if i were to be able to be bad ass mage i want to go to the edge with my eather ability and use every thing i can get a hold of to enchant or biuld a better spell, Do you think that Merlin in all the stories limited himself just because of his phycical realm?

  • ghost

i don’t like that the cuirass and greaves have been merged into one type unlike past tes titles.

  • Don Tony

i don’t know what’s the matter we can make a lot more armors now, so the number and variation types in skyrim are more than never before!!!

  • Terrence And Phillip

the new armor sets in skyrim mean more variation in outward appearance, more to choose from and all in all this means more freedom! ;)

  • Ruffy

i also like the skyrim armor sets, because there are both basics from past titles and new sets unique to skyrim included.^^

  • Big Willie

I love how everyone is freaking out about the armor. Screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Quit whining…you know you’ll be dumping serious hours into this game regardless. People will always have something to complain about. Here’s an idea, get into the industry, learn about how to design a game, become one of the best at your craft and make a serious impact. Fuming in a blog won’t get you anywhere. Have a good one ;)

BULLS*** “In fact, this frees up so much variation that the number and variation of armor types exceeds any previous the Elder Scrolls release” I’m not going to go count (actually I might) but Morrowind had a lot of armour… If skyrim has more than Morrowind(which I doubt) then it’s by a hardly significant amount
