Syndicate: EA Skips Online Passes To Boost Co-op Player Acceptance
In a move that would be music to the ears of DRM haters and Online Pass critics, Electronic Art’s soon to be released tactical shooter cum FPS title Syndicate will launch without an Online Pass. This has some EA observers scratching their heads since the game does pack quite a bit of substantial multiplayer content. Multiplayer content, if you need it spelled out, involves a lot of online content.
So what gives? According to the game’s executive producer, Jeff Gamon, the lack of an Online Pass highlights the fact that EA wants to showcase the multiplayer portion of the game as much as the single player element. Some observers speculate that this decision to forego Online Pass inclusion might have something more to do with the mixed pedigree of Syndicate more than anything else.
Syndicate is a product of both inhouse EA Partners’s code and the independent studio Starbreeze’s effots. EA relented in bending the rules a little bit so as to foster co-op play. EA’s gambit is that taking Online Pass out of the equation will boost player retention and hopefully push the replay value to the fore. It is betting on this easier co-op access along with a nice helping of good content to boost Syndicate’s player acceptance. The title is set for release on February 21.
