PS4: Playstation Move Steering Wheel Controller Patent Issued
You have to love how video game console, game, and accessory evolution takes place.
One competitor comes up with a product and other competitors try to one up it. That’s how it goes in the thankfully never-ending search to give the video game consumer the latest and greatest in digital entertainment. The Wii made some great strides when it released the Wii Wheel controller to the market. Well, it looks like Sony has created an answer to Nintendo’s Wheel based on a patent filing made last year in April. The patent proposal looks just like the Wii Wheel except for one interesting exception: There are grips on the wheel’s side that houses Sony’s motion control device, the Playstation Move.
The patent is described as an “ornamental design for a video game controller peripheral” was filed last year but only recently surfaced online. While this does make some Sony fans excited about how this factors into the Playstation 4, please note that just because a company filed for a patent does not mean that it will be approved by the US Patent office. Further, just because a company gets a patent, it does not mean they will go ahead and build and sell the actual product.
If anything, a patent filing just documents the thought processes of a company’s R & D department. Also, based on how companies, especially big ones, handle patents, it seems patent filings also reflects the inner workings of a company’s legal department. How? Many companies file patents not to actually create a product but to protect existing product lines from competition.
