Prototype 2: New Trailer Gets Deep into Melodrama
The new trailer for the upcoming horror survival title Prototype 2 does not pull any punches with its deep exploration of the emotions behind its protagonist’s storyline. It begins with combat footage of a soldier who is infected by a substance that turns him super human.
In the process, his wife and family are killed, and he has vowed to take revenge on the powers that wrecked his life and spread the virus to all the world. The video is, of course, quite dark, gritty, and, frankly, a bit over the top. As we have mentioned a few times before, video game trailers have fast appropriated the cinematic drama and heart touching power of traditional movie trailers. While some trailers do a good job of walking the tight rope between tugging your heart and building excitement for the game, some trailers go over the top and enter melodrama territory. Sadly, it appears that the Prototype 2 trailer with its huge belly flop on a concrete pavement, Johnny Cash Nine Inch Nails remake, climactic payback, and, of course, family drama, has bounded into melodrama territory. There just isn’t much left to the imagination.
No one likes to feel manipulated. Well, we expect trailers to be manipulative, but it has to be subtle. Obvious emotional manipulation comes off as ham-fisted, melodramatic, and, ultimately, ineffective. This trailer just tried to pack too much and did not leave the viewer much room to piece it all together and be emotionally touched. Talk about a far cry from that extremely effective Dead Island dead girl reverse chronology trailer
