Shift 2 Unleashed: Launch trailer released
Realism is the Holy Grail of racing games. This genre pursues this elusive quarry on three fronts: graphic realism, physics realism, and terrain realism. Differing racing game franchises have differing emphasis. Some focus on a pairing of realistic terrain and physics effects. While others focus on other combinations. The latest installment of the Need for Speed franchise, Shift 2, obviously focuses on graphics realism. Just judging from the launch video for this title, Shift 2′s developers almost got the graphic realism down pat–from amazing night racing segments to very realistic daytime racing. Shift 2′s graphics is just breathtaking and appears to definitely push the genre a notch higher in its goal to deliver as much realism current gaming platforms can supply.
Releases like this are what make reporting on gaming developments fun. I’ve been playing video games since the mid 80s and very few people back then could even imagine this level of detail. All we had were blocky graphics for Test Drive.
