Metal Gear Solid 5: Konami Teases Next Series Installment
You just gotta love video game marketing. If you appreciate creativity, observing video game marketing yields many gems. There are many ways to build interest in and anticipation for upcoming games, whether they are sequels in a series or standalone titles. It is obvious that a lot of video game marketing borrows heavily from movie marketing.
One commonly borrowed method is anticipation marketing. Just like those mysterious billboards sporting a logo and a calendar date, video games borrow this method by showing a game’s upcoming logo or image and a release date. Others are a bit more coy-just like movie posters. They would just ask a question that is a variant of “Are you ready?” and display the logo. No calendar date. If the game is a sequel of an already established series, the game’s marketing department can resort to a treasure chest of differing marketing gimmicks – “leaks”, rumors, job ad placements, exposes that are published then pulled, you name it. When it comes to game marketing, the only limit, truly, is one’s imagination. For the upcoming installment of the action game Metal Gear Solid, Konami plays it fairly straightforward by teasing series fans with the message “Big Boss Wants YOU! The next MGS.” As reported here earlier, series boss Hideo Kojima has been hiring staff members to work on Metal Gear Solid 5, the ad is a job ad that references the Metal Gear Solid team’s booth at San Francisco’s Game Developers Conference.

They are serious in getting staff to support “high end consoles and PC.” What makes the job ad/promo for Metal Gear Solid 5 interesting is that it is a tease. Sure, it tells people that MGS is hiring but it also teases fans. How? The job posting has a file folder that says “Do Not Click.” If you click it, you get treated to a picture of the big boss and a dog. It’s sure to tease many curious game fans.
