Borderlands 2: Gameplay Video Shows off Development of Game Look
In a new video that outlines its gameplay and other elements, the developer of the upcoming first person shooter RPG Borderlands 2, Gearbox Software, highlights how they came up with the aesthetics of the highly anticipated alternative shooter. Originally, Borderlands did not have the distinctive look it has now.
Developers and artists were beside themselves trying to come up with a look for the game. They eventually were able to come up with a distinctive look when they decided to step away from the photo-real paradigm and adopted a more comic-book feel. This really put the game on a differing footing and gave it a distinct identity from the mass of other first-person titles out there.
According to the development video, the change was several years into the development of the title. This is quite a stunning revelation since many publishers and developers would be very reluctant regarding such a massive content overhaul so late in the development process. It took a lot of courage for Gearbox and 2K to go this route and it is paying off in terms of the game’s distinct branded look. The downside of the eleventh hour design change was that it was fairly superficial and applied mostly to the characters. Environmental elements still bore a lot of the photo-realistic look that was replaced.
Borderlands 2 applies the trademark comic book look to all elements of the game. Not only that, the developer team wanted to analyze the comic book look’s appeal and figure out what makes it so popular and apply it to all levels of the game.
