Batman – Arkham City: Voice actor to stay on as The Joker
Thankfully, Batman game series fans’ won’t be as tortured as the fans of the film version of the Dark Knight. Unlike the big screen Joker who has been played by different actors, the video screen Joker will continue to be played by Mark Hamill (of original Star Wars fame). The big screen Joker’s portrayals ranged from the camp Caesar Romero of the 1960s TV Batman, to the psychopathic clown prince played by Jack “The Shining” Nicholson, to this generation’s dark and gritty Joker played by the late Heath Ledger.
While we’re sad that Batman – Arkham City and future titles won’t have such a wide range of voice actors as the film versions of the Batman canon, we’re also happy as Mark Hamill will bring consistency to the video game version of the Batman franchise. Consistency is a big factor in video games since the voice actor frames the character and it’s part of his persona. Anyhow, the rumors that Hamill will cease to voice the Joker after Batman – Arkham City turned out to be false.
Asked via Twitter whether Batman – Arkham City will be his last voice portrayal of the Joker, Hamill said that he hadn’t said he was going to quit. He just said that Batman – Arkham City was so good that it would be hard to beat. This confirms two things: there’s going to be another installment after Arkham City (yay!) and Hamill will voice Batman in such an installment (yay part two!). The buzz for Batman – Arkham City is deafening. I can’t wait to play it!
