The age of the Samurai is ending. A new Japan is in the process of being born while those who had been used to life with bow, horse and sword have to face the changes. The Victorian World is taking over Japan. This new world is fighting against Japanese tradition. The player must choose between the rising Imperial power and the Shogunate of an earlier era. He or she must choose the path and become part of the final battle for what Japan will become. This battle is called the Boshin War, which is the War of the Year of the Dragon.
The expansion is massive and standalone. It offers a whole new experience to the player. There are six new playable clans. Clans such as the Satsuma support modern imperial Japan and clans such as the Nagaoka support the Shogunate. With the expansion are not just new clans and new scenarios but also upgrades to the campaign map, new units and abilities that will help out in the epic battles played out in Total War – Shogun 2. There are three new agent types to choose from on the campaign map. There are four new historical scenarios, as well. The expansion is proving to be a huge addition to the main game.
