Star Wars – The Old Republic: Evangelical Christian Group is not Happy
Family Research Council is unhappy to say the least about the possible inclusion of same-gender romance in popular MMORPG Star Wars – The Old Republic. The council believes that Bioware has “gone to the dark side” with this kind of content.
BioWare, on the other hand, is not the one to avoid same-sex relationships in its RPG franchises. In fact, both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises feature homosexuality. Back in September 2011, it has also confirmed that Star Wars – The Old Republic will also featuring same-sex relationships. Apparently, the Family Research Council has just heard of this decision because it is just now condemning BioWare. Family Research Council president Tony Perkins posted a statement on the organization’s official website condemning BioWare’s decision and intention. Perkins posted: “In a galaxy not so far, far away, Star Wars gamers have already gone to the dark side”.
He went on to mention that Star Wars – The Old Repubilc will soon be using a special feature, which happens to be gay relationships. Perkins also mentioned that BioWare is including the feature because there had been complaints because of the lack of it. However, Perkin’s statement is not accurate. During the announcement made in September, BioWare said that the option was to be added in the future but was not yet included before because of “design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size.” There was no mention of complaints.
BioWare went on to say that there will be content expansions because SWTOR is an MMO and the genre thrives on that. The conservative organization, The Family Research Council, is based in Washington, DC. It has been around since 1983 when it was founded by James Dobson, an evangelical Christian leader. Electronic Arts has not yet commented on this issue by the time this article was being written.
Controversy is not new for Star Wars – The Old Republic. Same sex Romance was only added as a post release update.
