Sleeping Dogs: Dev Diary Explores Hong Kong Setting
A new developer diary explores the setting of the upcoming Hong Kong-based open world action game Sleeping Dogs. The game was originally titled True Crime – Hong Kong and supposed to be a reboot of the True Crime franchise owned by Activision, but ultimately canceled. This is where Square Enix took over.
However, since Square Enix didn’t buy the name rights to the series, it had to re-name the title, as Activision retain rights to the brand name. Sleeping Dogs is set in Hong Kong and features a police undercover operation seeking to infiltrate the Triads. The developer diary explores why Hong Kong was picked as the game’s setting. Various members of the game’s developer, United Front, share their thoughts regarding what makes Hong Kong such an interesting setting for the open world action title.
The dev diary discusses a wide range of topics ranging from the blending of Western and Easter game aesthetics, to how the Triads and Hong Kong police work. The video even mentions an interesting anecdote about a local celebrity that got “the chop” from the Triads.
The gameplay for Sleeping Dogs involve open world exploration with an over the shoulder third person camera perspective. Players get to step into the shoes of police officer Wei Shen as he tries to infiltrate the Triads.
