Saint’s Row – The Third: Penetrator Dildo Bat Does not Shock Developer

During his presentation at GDC, the design director of Saints Row – The Third, Scott Phillips, said that the game’s developer, Volition, encountered a dead end during the game’s  development. Part way in the game’s development process, the team decided to scrap the original idea for the title – base the sequel on an undercover cop story.

This theme was to have coordinated with choices the player made. Apparently, this direction resulted in something that didn’t have the series’ feel so the development team dropped this angle. While the development team was sure as to what the installment will not be, they were unsure as to what it should be. Volition finally got clarity when the art team pushed the envelope and came up with the dildo bat. This was the defining moment that cemented the story and development direction of the game. How did the dildo bat inspire the game’s builders to take the route they did? According to Philips, the dildo bat represented and also embodied where Volition wanted to go-the path less traveled. They want to give an impression to the player that there is a distinct Saints Row experience. The dildo bat was originally one of many specifications in a mission out of many specs. Apparently, the weapons started out as a minor detail. However, the art team went crazy with the concept and really pushed it.
