Half-Life 3: Valve Won’t Release Games Unless They Are More ‘Baked’ Says Newell
Faced with a growing clamor for Half-Life 3, Valve’s head honcho Gabe Newell addressed fan concerns about the fate of the game’s third installment. Newell said that Valve aims to have its titles more “baked” prior to announcing them. He listed Valve’s notable stable of great game titles and mentioned that the developer is committed to ensuring that the games’ stories and character development are progressing forward before any announcements.
Newell said that they aim to proceed like this while making sure “we don’t get into terminal sequelitis.” Considering the criticism against major franchises making annual releases which may or may just be reskinned versions of the previous year’s game, this is quite a substantive statement from Valve. It shows the company is not focused on creating annual release cash cows. This is part of the reason why Newell’s company has stepped back from discussing future titles so they don’t “get people too excited and then have to go and disappoint them.” Valve learned about this process during the multiple delays it suffered when developing Half-Life 2. According to Newell, “We’re sort of reacting in the other direction and saying ‘okay, well let’s have things a little more baked before we start getting people all excited about it.”
