Half Life 3: Employee Handbook Surfaces Starring Half-Life 3 T-Shirt
On a slow news day, there’s nothing we like better than a little bit of fun from Valve. I’ve got to admit, that is definitely up there with the top companies in the world to work for (just after GameBandits of course). Following a Flamhaus leak, Valve have now confirmed that the Valve Employee handbook, that is floating around the internet is totally genuine.
Valve is so cool about the leak that it has even released a PDF copy for us all to have a good look at. (Download at your own risk.) The handbook even contains a rather tongue in cheek reference to Half-Life 3! If you flick to page 22 you will see it in all its glory although you can also check it out in the illustration for this article. What is particularly interesting is that the handbook also contains the flat-hierarchy model that Valve was rumored to be run on. There are no bosses. Everybody is the same. The only exeption is Gabe Newell the man, the legend, and founder of Valve, who is shown to be above everyone else, although he says himself that he doesn’t really see himself as a boss.
The second really interesting revelation is how much importance Valve places on the hiring of really exceptional staff. It seems that this is the key to making a flat hierarchy system work. The system really works when a company hire’s staff who are capable or working independently. Those requiring spoon-feeding really won’t get on well there. Anyway. Enjoy the handbook and if you have aspirations of working for Valve, then I sincerely wish you the very best of luck.
