Defense of the Ancients 2: New trailer features cartoon-type graphics
Valve has quite a lot of big name games under its belt – Half-Life, Portal, and, for MMO fans, Team Fortress. Given its impressive game development track record, Valve more than qualifies in taking on quite a serious task – developing a sequel for what is probably the best loved Warcraft 3 mods ever, Defense of the Ancients aka DotA.
The original DotA is a free mod developed for free by members of the global Warcraft 3 community and played the world over. It has defined multiplayer strategy gameplay and has a fiercely loyal fanbase. Making a sequel for it would necessarily have to deal with tons of fan expectations and sensitivities. Not exactly an enviable position to be in. However, anxieties fans may have regarding the gall of someone to do a sequel of their beloved mod, we believe many fans’ sensitivities would be soothed by the new trailer video for Dota 2.
Narrated by a lovable narrator, the cartoon animation guides the viewer through the three differing types of players – range fighters (archer), melee fighter, and magic user. The animation and fluidity is, to say the least, interesting. Cartoon-like is another way to describe it. Word on the street is that Valve is developing Dota 2 on the Source engine they used for Team Fortress 2. While we’re sure there will be a minority of Dota diehards that won’t like the trailer, the real test is in how Valve can pull off the same gameplay excitement as the original. We’ll find out soon enough with the next (hopefully featuring gameplay sequences) trailer release.
