Mortal Kombat 9: Title Sells 3 Million Global Units
You remember arcades, right? Just in case you’re too young to remember, arcades are these large rooms stocked with arcade games – large free standing coin-operated boxes that have a monitor. This was the main way people played video games back before the days of Playstation and Xbox. Big name arcade games included Donkey Kong, Pac Man, and Dig Dug. Consoles have killed off arcade games but thanks to Warner Interactive’s purchase of Midway Games’ intellectual property assets, one of the biggest names of the arcade era made it to the console screen. We’re talking about the ultra-gory, extremely violent fighting game parents through the decades love to hate – Mortal Kombat.

After Midway went belly up in 2009, Warner Interactive bought the rights to Mortal Kombat and other Midway titles. This purchase is paying off big time for Warner. Its Mortal Kombat release, developed by NetherRealm Studios, has racked up 3 million units in global sales. That’s huge. So huge that, as we reported earlier, Warner has gotten quite a nice return on the money it spent acquiring the Mortal Kombat brand. According to Mortal Kombat’s creator and creative director Ed Boon, “All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance. Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it.”
