Final Fantasy 13-2: Final Fantasy Spin-Off Music and Screens Revealed
Square Enix sought a third party developer to work on a Final Fantasy spinoff with the title of “Fortress”. Nobody really knew that such a project existed until the Swedish company, GRIN, who was given the task to develop the game ended up closing. For awhile then, GRIN was working on several projects for different publishers. “Fortress” was one of those video games that were cancelled.
After the company was closed, some details about the cancelled video game came to the surface. So now, we are able to sample some of the music that was supposed to be part of the game’s soundtrack. Erik Thunberg, the project’s music director then, added one of the tracks to his website as part of his portfolio. So, we get to listen to the music. Have you heard the music yet? It sounds promising. If we were to judge the video game based on the music, we were supposed to be treated with epic gameplay. That makes the whole cancellation sadder, unfortunately. Anyway, the music really sounds great. You can almost imagine the gameplay associated with it as it takes some melodic heights that feels very triumphant. Even though “Fortress” was supposed to be a spinoff, the music is as fantastic as the music you hear from the Final Fantasy soundtracks.
There are also some screen shots and design sketches from the abandoned project. You will find some character concept art, which are usually easier to find anyway. However, you will also find some sketches of the planned gameplay as well as renderings of certain scenes. They all look so good that it really is sad that the fantasy game, set in the Final Fantasy world of Ivalice, had been either completely cancelled or just set aside for another developer to take over. We are hoping for the latter.
