Call of Duty – Black Ops 2: Will this game be called Blast Furnace Instead?

Activision is poised to reveal the release date and the official name of this year’s flavor of the Call of Duty first person shooter annual release. The announcement will take place on May 1. With only a few days left until the announcement, intrepid gaming blogosphere sleuths have unearthed an interesting find, to say the least.

These gaming investigative journalists have uncovered the fact that Activision has recently registered the domain “theblastfurnace.com.” Further investigation shows that the domain was snapped up from a domain reseller for somewhere between ten thousand and twenty thousand dollars. What’s more, the same sleuths showed that the company has recently filed for a trademark for the name “The Blast Furnace.” In the trademark filing application, Activision has given the following detail: it is for a “computer game software” and for “Entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game.” Of course, the rest of the gaming blogosphere jumped on this revelation like white on rice and automatically assumed that this filing is all about the next Call of Duty game. If so, wouldn’t it be a tad too obvious? Also, given how fast domain names are snapped up online, wouldn’t you think Activision would have reserved the name of their next game several months if not a year or two ahead of time? It is not like they are developing a game that only costs a few hundred thousand to develop.

Given the amount of resources they pour into each project, you would think they would have a more aggressive domain reservation strategy. Also, the “blast furnace” does not necessarily have to connote a combat game. It could be a good name for a wide range of game genres not just fps. Thankfully, we’ll know soon enough if the next COD game will be Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 or the Blast Furnace.
