Bioshock – Infinite: Fans Want the 1999 Mode

Where you a respondent to a survey given out by IrrationalGames.com last December? This was the one on getting to understand just how people play games. Well, they conducted a new survey this year and this one aimed to find out if fans like a certain new Bioshock – Infinite feature.

The results have already been tallied. It looks like fans want the 1999 mode. What is the Bioshock – Infinite 1999 mode anyway? It is a challenging gaming mode for one. While playing in this mode, you have to carefully look at just how reasonable or strategic your decisions are. It helps to know that all of your choices will result to consequences that you can no longer undo. This means that if you end up in a situation that is unsuitable to your preferences and gaming style then you are in trouble.

The 1999 mode is not just about adjusting the difficulty of Bioshock – Infinite. It is about being able to plan well. You have to be thrifty with your resources, for example. You also need to be able to specialize in some sort of combat. Combat skills are more useful than weapons because you cannot use your weapons without skill. Careful targeting is important, too. In the mode, you also have to note that your health will have a different baseline.

Ken Levine, Irrational Games Creative Director, believes that game saves are very crucial to the game. According to him, the most committed and long-standing fans of the franchise will be going “back to our roots”. He also ends up summarizing what the 1999 mode will mean to any player. The 1999 mode is about the careful planning with thoughts of the possible consequences and the fact that those consequences can be completely irreversible. But hey, fans voted for the mode’s existence.
