Battlefield 3: Ungrateful Fans Get an Earful from DICE

Considering that Battlefield 3 is one of the most heavily anticipated first person shooter titles this year and given the award winning graphics, award winning gameplay and other game elements that have won rave reviews from all over the world, you would think the fans of this upcoming title would be excited and grateful.

Well, as evidenced by fan feedback at the UK forum for publisher EA, it appears that many forum community members weren’t too thrilled when they learned that the only available map for the Battlefield 3 beta was going to be Operation Metro. Apparently, the disappointment came from the fact that previously, DICE announced that Metro won’t be the testmap and it turned out that it would be. Apparently, many fans had their hearts set on playing on a different map, preferably one that would allow up to 64 players. So, they were upset by the revelation that Operation Metro was going to be the actual map.

Because of the ungrateful attitude of the forum members, the moderator of the UK EA forum lashed out these ungrateful fans. The moderator of the Battlefield 3 forum said “The beta is a privilege, not a right unless you pre-ordered the game… We are not even obligated to send out a Beta yet, yet we do because we want our players to experience the game. The vibe I’m getting now is just that tons of ungrateful people don’t understand how much work we are putting on this game, how many overtime hours we are doing and also how many meetings we are in to ship a game like this. It’s not just a click and point type of development.”

    Headline:

Pc gamers turn out to be complete douchebags incapable of experiencing positive emotions or finishing a sentence without bashing call of duty.

Seriously I’m shocked.. Utterly, utterly stunned…

  • Tim

Agreed. Dont get me wrong, 80% of the PC community are patient, helpful and fair, but the other 20% are just ungrateful dicks who dont know how much work it takes to come out with a game like this.

    • Mike

while you’re right that people don’t appreciate how much work it takes, it would be stupid to think that is relevant.

Fans are angry because the product being presented to them isn’t necessarily what they wanted to buy. They’re perfectly entitled to voice this; just as they’re entitled to complain about the beta not being remotely representative of the game when the only playable mode was rush.

Just as fans need to remember they’re not actually entitled to everything, developers need to remember they’re working essentially for the people who will be purchasing a licence to their product (the game). The minute they forget that and think they deserve respect for their effort rather than their result, is when they forget what the hell they’re actually doing in business.

its not the fact that how much time it takes, to me the game was released too soon, they should of worked on it for another 6-12 months easily, EA has done this with every new title, they rush the release date then release a sub-par game, i’ve been a battlefield fan for a while now and honestly after this i might as well switch to call of duty,

“The biggest issue with Battlefield this year is that they put sooo much into the graphics and the “CoD killing” that they totally missed the point of the game. Its obviously not gone well for them, and its stands to reason.”

read this in another forum and agree with it 100%
deadlines should not be a factor if the game is not completed, i’ve read somewhere else that they rushed making some maps because of time constraints

  • Fuglier

Oh yeah, and the console demographic of 13 year olds is so much more mature.

    • Reg

You just proved the 1st 2 commenters point for them. Great job.

  • Mike

It’s pretty sad really, all those people wasting time crying about how they don’t get the map they want. Wait til the full game and you can play any map you choose. I’m pretty excited, I’ve only seen footage of Metro and I think it’ll be different from the alpha.

  • Sam

Hell yeah. I say it’s awesome that the ungrateful pricks got an earful. I hate hearing people whine and when they are getting a FREE SERVICE! People need to learn some manners. On both console AND pc!

  • Lord

You guys think all this is a gift from DICE to players right?

You are wrong. It’s an advertisement, a marketing play. You think they would give anything away if they would not make profit out of it?

Get out of your dream worlds. Do I have to be grateful because EA/DICE advertising a product that they will make millions from?

It is a fail advertisement of a game which born with conquest but they are showing a rush map. And call it ‘Real Successor’ and say ‘PC Is the lead platform.’ not showing anything about PC version of the game.

You say whatever you’d like. Immature, ungrateful. I say It’s just an advertisement and yes, they owe us a money worth product after all. Not just DICE, every other studio, publisher.

It’s not just about not getting the map you want.. this game was released to make money.. and a map that has no vehicles, that is somewhat linear is not representative of the battlefield series. If they want people excited about this, hit them with a map that shows everything battlefield is.. then after the beta ends it will keep them wanting more. I dunno, just seemed like a bad move to me.. almost like they think it’ll draw in some modern warfare players.. I appreciate all of the hard work they’ve put into this, but whoever is in charge seems to have his vision clouded.

  • qtis

After playing Metro i felt disappointed. Maybe it was lack of vehickles or huge environments that i expected in bf3. I still hope to see Caspian Border on beta soon. I hope it will change my mind. Now it looks too much like ModernWarfare – close quarters only ruins battlefield. After several games in Metro i switched to BF:BC2 and experienced more fun there. It seems that bc2 even looks better on console than bf3. Let’s hope that’s because of beta stage but I seriously doubt graphics on console will improve drasticly.

  • Mike

The nerve of this guy to call fans “ungrateful” is sickening. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, my friend.

I’m sure the license plate on his Ferrari says “Madden 1″, but soon enough that gravy train will end, and if their only successors will be crappy looking games like BF3, then he’ll be joining 10% of Americans on the unemployment line.

BF3 looks like crap…fans aren’t ungrateful for recognizing that.

    • Reg

What games did you produce that have had such critical acclaim and accolades thrown upon it? Could you remind me and the rest of the public? I don’t recall you sacrificing hours, months, and years in development to provide an experience to people just to receive feedback that is deserved of no one.

      I’m just saying…

  • Super Anonymous

i am agreed that they have done a bad move, first impression is crucial for BF3.And when they give a somewhat buggy BETA (not a demo) to public, you can expect a negative feedback. but clearly it’s not a crappy game at all. it looks like Crysis2 and rush mode still far superior than some crappy free-for all death match mode.

  • Joe

“The beta is a privilege, not a right unless you pre-ordered the game… We are not even obligated to send out a Beta yet, yet we do because we want our players to experience the game.”

Then why doesn’t Dice just put out a demo? Betas are mostly for bug testing. If anything I should be receiving something for going through that buggy mess.

  • Jake

Still not explaining why they locked out the Caspian Border map, you know, the map with jets, helicopters, 64 player spawning etc.

That experience was going to influence my purchase decision, but it’s gone now, so it looks like they won’t be getting my money.

I’ve been a BF gamer since the beginning and have shelled out for first runs every time but I have to say most of the frustration that is coming out is due to several issues. Personally, I’m not frustrated and try to give good feedback on all the forums – even to those who tend to flame DICE for what they believe is wrong.

First – the comment about “…we are not obligate…” is true BUT you are asking millions of dedicated customers to purchase a $60 game – sight virtually unseen. Now, I can afford to do this, and still do because I know that based on past performance, DICE builds quality games, however, I will say that even the best can (and have) built less than acceptable products when under pressure (e.g. EA is a pressure cooker – believe me, been there). The time between BF2 and BFBC2 was about 5 years – so that works out to be only $12/year (not including the expansion packs) – good return on my investment, considering I played BF2 approximately 632 hours (that’s nearly a month of continuous play). Not to mention the investment we make in our gaming rigs (I’ve spent over $10K since 2002). So what I’m trying to say is, don’t bring that attitude to me and the other fans who’ve supported DICE 100%, we don’t need to be treated like bad children – we invest time and money in YOUR product.

Second – There is an obvious disconnect between DICE and the PC fan base. I might be wrong, but based on the feedback on Battlelog (excluding all the smacktards whining about this and that) I don’t see anything coming out of DICE identifying what exactly will or won’t be fixed (e.g. “Thanks, we didn’t see that” or “No, we are not going to change that as we feel….”). Communication is a two way road – we were asked to pre-purchase the game and in return, we’ll let you Beta test the product, which we’ve done (are doing). We’ve given some real good feedback on efficiencies/deficiencies and would like to know what’s made the cut and what has not. Note: I did read the US/UK moderators News information that showed some of the changes that were already implemented but not even close to the number of bugs/deficiencies identified in the Forums. Even if DICE informed us that they are not going to notify us of all the changes, I think the majority of us more mature fans would understand.

Third – Don’t ask if you don’t want to know the facts (and yes – if you ask you will get about 85% whining, flame-mail, etc… but don’t ignore the other 15%). The moderator getting upset means he needs thicker skin and shouldn’t get so worked up. I know he’s most likely passionate about the game, but remember so are we. We’ve come to depend on DICE to deliver a game that is more than mind numbing killing – it’s a release from every day pressures that would otherwise be spent on something less enjoyable. We’ve built communities of like minded comrades and actually enjoy working together toward a common goal – totally pwning complete strangers in a virtual battle simulation. So don’t get so worked up when some of us get a little crazy about the changes.

  • nisse

I can fully understand that a bunch of whining teenagers can be annoying, but when said teenagers are your customers you better suck up and behave like an adult.

Telling people to be grateful for a product you’re selling is just plain stupid.

  • jon

it’s not about being ungrateful. people who do not care about the game would not even be on a forum to show their grieves.

i, we come on the forum to express our concerns with BF3. It looks great but it’s not the game we had expected to be.

DICE promised us that BF3 would be a true successor of BF2 but it ain’t.
    For example :

    - clustered flags with conquest
    - no advanced custom controls for each vehicles
    - auto regen for vehicles
    - no bombs for planes
    - big maps which are actualy small due to design
    - pixel shooting with tanks
    - unlocks for vehicles which should have been default
    - minimap which does not work

THESE are things which upset us as true fans of the battlefield series.
The game looks now if it has been created to ease the COD fans.

BF3 is a joke compared to BF2 when it comes the above settings.
DICE played us and THAT’s why we come to forum to complain, to make this game the game it should have been.

  • Rodney

An open beta infers some measure of feedback. I gave you stinging feedback, not because I’m ungrateful, but because I want you to succeed. I think you misunderstand devotion for negativity.
The LAST thing DICE needs are fanboys saying everything is just peechy. Conformists that don’t have an opinion that veers from a company’s portrayal.
All my best to you and it’s the PC that Brought you here to where you are. Not VICE VERSA. Rather than reverence to Dice, Dice should be reverent to their audience. Not the audience they WISH they had.

  • Jarda

I want my money back :( – it’s just CoD named Battlefield 3. I’m gonna uninstall it and turn back to good old BF2 – more fun, well balanced, teamwork, more tactics. This is just MW2 sh*t with different name!
