Resident Evil – Revelations: Nintendo Markets 3DS With Cool Live Action Shorts
During that lull after Christmas many of us in the gaming industry wondered what was next for Nintendo’s cutting edge 3D gaming platform the 3DS.
Then Capcom delighted us with the third-person survival horror shooter Resident Evil – Revelations. The story takes place between the Resident 4 and the Resident Evil 5 timelines following the series’ mainstay characters Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield.
However I probably do not need to tell you how great the game is as the release met with critical acclaim when it was unveiled last month. For those people who have been living under a rock, Nintendo have launched a new series of live action shorts which offer good common sense advice on how to survive the waves of enemy attacks. My favourite shorts in the series are Focus is Everything where poor Jill is swept out from underneath by an off-screen foe, Always Look Behind You, where the protagonist is – well I am sure you can tell what happens in that video, and They Are Always Watching. There are 15 videos in total all shot in the same style, the dark eery music, the distorted filter on the camera, all designed to make you jump when the character is taken by an unseen enemy. I have to admit the effect kind of loses it’s value after you have watched a couple of videos in a row – which is why I have cherry picked the best clips.
Using a live action trailer to advertise the game is very smart of Nintendo. The main selling feature of the 3DS is the unique 3D screen. Obviously it is impossible for most people to watch trailers in 3D unless they have a swanky TV so one of the main selling points of the game and console cannot be advertised. Gameplay clips are therefore normally shown in traditional 2D. Using live action allows Nintendo to show that on the console, the enemies really do come from everywhere. If you want to check out the rest they are all on Youtube.
