The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim: A Daedra’s Best Friend
In this guide we will guide you through the quest a Daedra’s Best Friend in the Daedric Quests. The quest starts at Falkreath. You can do this by following the road to Falkreath where you can be randomly approached by Barbas. You may also go through a Misc. Quest. Of course, you can also go directly to Falkreath’s front gate. A guard will stop you there and tell you that Lod lost his dog. Ask for more info and then speak to Lod. Lod will give you meat as bait for his dog. You will also be given directions as to where the dog has last been seen.
The dog is called Barbas. He wants to go back to his master. Barbas says his real maser is Clavicus Vile, a Daedric prince. The dog will lead you to Clavicus’s Shrine at Haemar’s Shame. It will take some time. Follow Barbas. He will walk on and sometimes bark. You do have to fight off hostile wolves and people along the way. You have to deal with vampires at Haemar’s Shame when you do arrive there. Kill all the vampires you pass through the cave. Fight off bandits, as well. Barbas may kill some vampires as well. Kill the head vampire as you reach him then approach Clavicus Vile’s shrine. Interact with it.

Clavicus does not want Barbas back. Barbas has to earn re-entry of sorts. You have to find the Rueful Axe, a powerful Daedric artifact. A spot on your map will be marked. Barbas will come with you. Fast-travel to a spot near the axe’s location. On the next dungeon, kill the wizard you meet in the first room. Grab the Rueful Axe, which on a nearby table. Fast-travel to Clavisu. He will give you two options.
- Kill Barbas. Clavicus will take the dog back and place it in “full power”. You get to keep the axe.
- Don’t kill Barbas. You will then forfeit the axe and Clavicus absorbs Barbas but he gives you the Masque of Clavicus Vile.
