Deus Ex – Human Revolution: Yelena Fedorova Strategy

Yelena is the first boss you’ll encounter that has a cloaking ability. She won’t be the last cloaking boss so get used to counteracting and defeating the cloaking ability. Thankfully, she is quite easy to defeat if you use the right augmentation. Using your spare Praxis points, purchase the EMP Resistance augmentation located in the Dermal Armor upgrade tree. Buy this augmentation right before you enter the last room of the Picus building. The EMP Resistance augmentation makes your fight with Yelena much easier. Once you enter the room, a cutscene takes over and it will conclude with the opening of your combat with Yelena.

From the start, strafe to the right or left. This allows you dodge Yelena’s charging attack. Don’t let her connect because she can deal out a lot of damage with this attack.  If you successfully evaded her attacks blast her with your weapons. This will stun her. Once she is stunned, search the room quickly for energy relays.

If you augmented with the EMP resistance earlier, shoot all of them at Yelena. The EMP discharge should be enough to eliminate her. If you don’t have this augmentation, use Typhoon. Stun her using the tactics described above, get close to her, and start blasting her with the Typhoon. Pause to replenish your energy. Keep blasting her with your weapons. The revolver (armed with explosive rounds), the 10mm pistol loaded with armor piercing rounds, and the heavy rifle with cooling upgrade are the best weapons against Yelena.

If you didn’t augment with EMP Resistance, here is a strategy to beat Yelena: load up on ammo and stay in the middle of the room. Wait for her to charge at you. Be on the lookout since she might shoot you while you’re waiting for her charge. When she starts charging, sprint to the left or right. Get close enough to her but avoid a collision. Once you’ve closely dodged her charge, she’ll pause briefly. Use this time to blast her with your weapons. She will do this attack about 3 to 4 times before hiding. Boost your health while she’s hiding. Keep following this sequence until you’ve killed her.

Umm, I suppose this approach would work if you like being the gun bunny who stands in the middle of the room with a target painted on him, but I have some better suggestions.

While EMP resistance is helpful in various places throughout the game, in this fight you can avoid most or all of the EMP damage by *not standing in water* so you don’t get shocked when she releases the electricity. There’s water on most of the floor of the room, but dry spots can be found. My favorite one is just to the right of where you start, outside the ring of obstacles.

A really fine way to combat the cloaked bosses is to drop a mine on their approach route to where you are – both of them have pretty predictable movements. In Federova’s case, she is going to charge at you from the center of the room – note that my favorite dry spot is also not in a direct line from the center, so she will have to round the nearest corner (which is the spot where you started) to get you. So drop a mine there. When she sets it off she will become visible and prematurely discharge her EMP; since you are not standing in water, it won’t hit you. You can then unload on her with whatever gun you like for a second or so until she re-cloaks and runs away. Rinse, repeat. (Also, Eliza is trying to help you; she will tell you when Federova is starting her charge.)

The first time I did this battle, I didn’t understand the limitations of the target-seeking mod on the combat rifle and wasted all my ammo. I was still able to finish with my grenades and PEPS, though it was wasteful. The second time through, Federova actually glitched and got stuck at the spot where my mine caught her, which only seemed like poetic justice for the stupidity of having boss battles at all in the game.
